The attitude changes of Bilbo Baggins as the main character in J.R.R Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit"

In this study, the writer analyzed “The Hobbit”, one of the great novels written by J.R.R Tolkien. It was the prelude to the trilogy of “The Lord of the Rings”, also written by the same author. The trilogy told about the emergence of a ring that had the power to control the dark side of the world. It became the starting point of the trilogy. It was Bilbo Baggins, the main character of “The Hobbit” who found the ring and there began the story of “The Lord of The Rings”. Bilbo Baggins was a respectable and rich hobbit who lived in a comfortable hobbit hole. He preferred domesticity to adventure. He was very laid back and hesitant to go out for adventure. But, soon he found himself caught up in the escapes of Gandalf, the good wizard, and a group of dwarves in the journey to retain the treasure of the dwarves which had been stolen by Smaug, the dragon. Bilbo was hardly the raw material of a hero, but as the story progressed, he developed and matured into a clever and brave hero. Throughout the novel, he longed for his home, but he was able to perform his duties as a member of the group. Finding the ring that was able to make him invisible was certainly the greatest tactical advantage that he gained in the story. This study was considered as a qualitative study. It is qualitative since the analysis of the data was based on the understanding toward the context. The novel was analyzed according to the theory of literature and attitude change. The writer included the process of attitude change of the main character in “The Hobbit” through the theory of character, setting, plot and behavior. In order to develop understanding of this phenomenon, she captured some details of Bilbo’s behavior. The writer had her conclusion that Bilbo changed to be a different hobbit. He grew to be an extraordinary one. He did something that he (or even other hobbits) never thought of doing before. He had realized that he had something that he had never thought before. It was the adventure which revealed who he really was. There were three attitude changes in Bilbo. They were his attitude toward life, adventure and problems. Based on the finding on the analysis of the attitude changes of the main character, the writer believed that people were continuously changing and there were many factors influencing it
